Updated PowerBook G4 and iBook Price Trackers
Monday, December 31, 2001 @ 2:35:PM CT | Article Link
We've updated our PowerBook G4 Price Tracker and iBook Price Tracker with all the latest information on prices, bundles, and availability from 13 major Apple Authorized Resellers.
New PowerBooks with the combo drives are beginning to show up at resellers, and we expect most of them to be reporting stock by the end of this week or early next. See our previous news postings for more. iBooks are still in abundant supply, although not every reseller is reporting stock of every iBook, and the Apple Store is still listing a 7 day wait. Strange. At any rate, take a look at our price trackers, and you'll see that you can get your hands on any PowerBook or iBook at a decent price or with a decent bundle.

Monday, December 31, 2001 @ 10:30:AM CT | Article Link
That's what Apple is saying on their website about Macworld Expo next week. It's right there on the main page. If that's not hyping it up, then we don't know what is. Let's just hope that Steve Jobs is able to deliver next Monday and that this isn't just another case of the little boy crying wolf.
Rumors have been circulating about the possibility of LCD iMacs, Power Macs over 1GHz (G4 or G5), some new digital device, OS X software, and making X the standard OS on new Macs. But that stuff is expected. People on the Mac Web have been talking about it for weeks. To make a bold statement like this, though, Jobs had better pull something out of a hat.
We plan on covering the keynote and all the product introductions. Indeed, look for our Price Tracker to expand its product coverage beginning next week...

Help with first-generation AirPort Base Station failures
Sunday, December 30, 2001 @ 2:23:PM CT | Article Link
It's no secret that some first-generation AirPort Base Stations have failed. Apple has been unofficially replacing these units with newer models, and even though this little bit of news has made the rounds before, it's worth repeating:
"My 1st generation airport base station gave up the ghost last week. My powerbook could not detect a signal and all attempts to reset, force reload software and, generally, poke around, were without success.
When I finally decided to give up and pay the $50 fee to have the folks at applecare see if there was anything they could do, I was very PLEASANTLY surprised to hear that (after trying to force reload, etc), my airport base station serial number "fell within the range of apple's service plan." In other words, Apple is sending me a new base station absolutely free of charge and complete with a 90-day warranty. To top it all off, I didn't even have to pay the $50 applecare fee. Needless to say, I am a very happy camper. Anyone using an airport base station might be very interested to know of this little secret--especially if their unit suddenly gives out, as mine did. It could save them $250."
Update 12/31:
"My 2 year old airport died a few months back and I received the same service as Apple is replacing airports that have serial numbers between PW940 ... PW952 as the capacitors were defective.
http://www.vonwentzel.net/ABS/Repair.html is an excellent resource for those who aren't in this group and would like to fix their own."

A week or more wait for iBooks at The Apple Store
Thursday, December 27, 2001 @ 8:11:PM CT | Article Link
Perhaps Apple's $100 cash-back rebate is just really popular, but there is now a 7 day wait for new iBooks at The Apple Store--10 days for the CD-RW model. With the Apple Store out of iBooks and Apple's $100 rebate ending on the 31st, rumors are bound to start circulating about new iBooks at Macworld Expo on January 7th. Not that it makes any sense to us, with updated machines released just over two months ago, but Apple did surprise us all with Combo PowerBooks a few days ago, right?

Updated PowerBook G4 and iBook Price Trackers
Sunday, December 23, 2001 @ 5:20:PM CT | Article Link
We've updated our PowerBook G4 Price Tracker and iBook Price Tracker with all the latest information on prices, bundles, and availability from 13 major Apple Authorized Resellers.
Apple's $100 iBook rebate expires on the 31st of this month, so now is the time to pick up one of these models. No iBook updates are expected at Macworld Expo next month (although it is kind of funny that the rebate expires just before the show). The same is true for the recently updated PowerBook G4s--no changes at Macworld Expo. Don't hold us to it, but the show should focus on desktops, OS X, and perhaps a digital-lifestyle device.

OS X 10.1.2: Still no video support for older PowerBooks and iBooks
Friday, December 21, 2001 @ 11:20:AM CT | Article Link
Mac OS X 10.1.2 still does not provide support for the video cards in Lombard and earlier PowerBook G3s and some iBooks and iMacs, even though Apple has stated that Mac OS X is supported on these machines. Add your name to the ATI driver petition to encourage Apple to support these older video cards.
Internal combo drive or external CD burner. What's best for you?
Friday, December 21, 2001 @ 10:51:AM CT | Article Link
by Stephen Hildreth
With the introduction of revised PowerBook G4s with internal slot-loading combination DVD/CD-RW drives, PowerBook users were given the option of burning CDs on the road, something iBook owners have enjoyed since last May. This is a boon for power users with the need to burn CDs on the fly, or for users wishing for a less-cluttered work space. Before you run out and buy one of these new models, though, you need to consider your needs. Do you really need that internal CD-RW drive, or would an external model be a better choice? Should you upgrade your existing PowerBook G4/550 or PowerBook G4/667 for $299 though Apple's upgrade program?
To answer these questions, we need to take a look at the price/performance equation. According to Apple, the iBook/Combo's internal CD-RW drive reads CDs at 24x, writes to CD-R at 8x, and writes to CD-RW at 4x. The drive in the new PowerBook G4s can read DVDs at 8x and CDs at 24x, and write to CD-R and CD-RW discs at 8x, so it's a little faster than the one in the iBook.
External models, however, are lots faster. External FireWire models are available (from ClubMac, for example) for $215 that are capable of burning CD-R media at 24x, CD-RW media at 10x, and reading CDs at 40x. These units are not compact or portable, but they sure are fast. For someone with no intention of burning CDs on the road, this is clearly a better choice than a slower, and more expensive, internal CD-RW option.
More portable drives, such as MCE's Lucid ($299), burn CD-R and CD-RW at 8x and read CDs at 24x. For the same price as Apple's combo upgrade program, these portable drives offer no speed increase. In this case, upgrading your 550 or 667 may be a better choice, since its resale value will be much higher when the time comes to sell it on our PowerBook Classifieds.
In the end, it comes down to whether speed, price, or portability are important to you. Or whether you simply need to have the latest gadget. If you aren't going to burn CDs on the road, then purchase a cheaper and much faster external FireWire drive. For those with a need to burn CDs while away from the desk, there is little difference in price or speed when comparing internal combo drives or portable FireWire burners. The internal combo drives are a slightly better choice simply due to their convenience--no cables and enclosures to haul around.

Combo PowerBooks: Finding the lowest prices
Tuesday, December 18, 2001 @ 12:03:AM CT | Article Link
Looking to spring for one of those new PowerBook G4s with a combo drive? What's the lowest price you can get? Based on the information we've gathered for our PowerBook G4 Price Tracker, we can point you to two deals:
For students and educators:
Students and teachers can find the lowest price at The Apple Store for Education. Qualifying customers can get a PowerBook G4/550/Combo for $2161 and a PowerBook G4/667/Combo for $2819. UPS Ground shipping is free at The Apple Store. The Apple Store will charge you sales tax, depending on your state of residence, and this might actually move the price point higher than the deal we outline next.
For other customers:
Including their online instant rebate, ClubMac has the PowerBook G4/550/Combo and PowerBook G4/667/Combo available for $2225 and $2895, respectively. Those prices represent a $74 and $104 savings over similar models offered at the Apple Store, not including sales tax and shipping charges. ClubMac charges sales tax only for California residents, while the Apple Store requires that all customers pay sales tax (based on your state's official sales tax). A 5% sales tax would add $114.95 to the purchase price of a PowerBook G4/550 at The Apple Store and $149.95 to a 667MHz model. ClubMac will charge you $15-$20 for shipping. ClubMac will also include a free Lexmark Z23 printer. So not only do you get the lowest price, but you also get a free printer.
None of these models are in stock yet, but we expect them to start shipping between Christmas and New Years.

Apple Bumps Current PowerBook Orders Up To Combo Models
Monday, December 17, 2001 @ 11:31:AM CT | Article Link
Have a PowerBook G4 on order at the Apple Store? Looks like you'll be getting an early Christmas surprise:
"I had ordered the "Fastest" Powerbook G4 Configuration on 12/7. After spending the weekend ironing out my Apple Loan and Shipping details, the order was processed on the 10th. When I checked the Order Status page, I noticed only my AppleCare package had shipped, so I called Apple. I was told a there was going to be a delay of up to 10 business days, which I just chalked up to the Holiday Shopping Season.
When I arrived to work this morning (12/17) I decided, for kicks, to check out the page to see if my TiBook had shipped yet. The first thing I noticed was on the front page of store.apple.com: The PBG4 had a Combo drive listed. I decided to see if I could upgrade my order before it shipped, but when I pulled up the status page, my DVD TiBook had been cancelled, and an identical Combo drive system ordered."
ClubMac Lowers PowerBook G4/DVD Prices
Monday, December 17, 2001 @ 11:22:AM CT | Article Link
ClubMac has significantly lowered their prices on previous 550 & 667MHz PowerBook G4s. They now have the PowerBook G4/550/DVD available for $1935 including their online instant rebate and Apple's free Double-RAM. The PowerBook G4/667/DVD is available for $2695 including the online instant rebate and Apple's Double-RAM. Those are the lowest prices we've seen so far for the DVD models.
Apple Updates TiBook. Should You Upgrade So Soon?
Monday, December 17, 2001 @ 11:10:AM CT | Article Link
by Stephen Hildreth
Only two months after their most recent update, Apple has updated the PowerBook G4 to include a slot-loading Combo drive. Other than the new drive, both 550MHz and 667MHz models remain the same, with the exception of the 550MHz model, which jumps $100 in price to $2299.
Most people were surprised that Apple didn't include a Combo drive when the PowerBook G4 was updated in October, and this most recent update is welcome by many. But what if you just purchased a 550 or 667MHz model without the slot-loading drive (as did this editor)? Should you feel cheated? Did Apple deceive you by offering an updated model in October knowing full well that they would include a Combo drive once supplies became available? The messages streaming into PowerBook Central this morning indicate that some of these people are rather annoyed:
"Sucks that I just ordered mine last month. Apple kind of screwed us."
"I just purchased a PowerBook about 10 days ago, and I would have loved this feauture."
This editor feels that way a bit, too. So should you upgrade? And if you didn't buy one of the previous models, is now the time to snag a new PowerBook with one of the Combo drives? That depends on your needs. Do you need to portable CD burner? Frankly, you can get faster external CD burners that do the job very well, and if you have no intention of burning CDs on the road, then these are a better option. Don't worry about the new models. Then again, if you regularly burn CDs on the road, then one of the Combo models will be very attractive.
I was initially more than a little annoyed at Apple for making my PowerBook G4/667 obsolete so soon. I mean, isn't it more like 8 months between model updates? But after I thought about it for a while, I realized that I'm not missing anything. I have yet to burn a CD on the road, and a faster external burner suits me just fine.
I think.
Keep an eye on our PowerBook G4 Price Tracker as we update it with the new models, and check out today's other news as we cover the introduction of the new models.

Apple Discontinues Double-RAM PowerBook Promotion
Monday, December 17, 2001 @ 10:41:AM CT | Article Link
Yep, Apple's free double-the-RAM promotion is not available with the slot-loading combo models. However, the new models have twice as much RAM as the previous models--256MB with the 550MHz model, and 512MB with the 667MHz model. The previous models with DVD or CD-RW drives will have the double-RAM included as long as they exist in the supply chain.

These models are available today at The Apple Store with a 1 week waiting period. All other features remain the same, except the 550MHz model jumps $100 in price to $2299. We'll have more for you later.

Protect Your PowerBook: Best Suggestion
Thursday, December 13, 2001 @ 3:02:PM CT | Article Link
by Stephen Hildreth
In regards to our article Tuesday about using various security devices to prevent your laptop from being stolen, one reader had perhaps the best suggestion for keeping prying eyes away:
"Perhaps laptop computer users should consider a technique used by some photographers to protect their expensive camera equipment: Diaper bags. Baby diaper bags are padded, highly water resistant, very cheap and festive. Most importantly, though, what thief in his/her right mind would steal a diaper bag?"
As someone with two children currently in diapers, I can attest to the viability of this suggestion. Diaper bags are rarely given a second look, and to make it even more believable, put a couple of stinky diapers on top. Do this, and people will leave your laptop alone even if they know it's in there.

PowerBook G4/CD-RW: Reader Mailbag
Thursday, December 13, 2001 @ 1:06:PM CT | Article Link
Have you received your PowerBook G4/CD-RW? We received the following messages from our readers:
"I got mine! Yesterday my PB G4/550 with CD-RW arrived. I ordered it on Nov. 7. I guess Apple's saying it's not available while they fill the orders they had. So far (my fingers are crossed) it's working fine. I have a PB G4/500 here in the office, so I can compare the two. The Rev. 2 screen seems brighter, the keyboard feels a little "clickier," and more robust. The frame in general seems stiffer. And the optical drive works better. The DVD drive in my Rev. A model often doesn't see a disk."
"To add to your reports about TiBook CDRW shipping delays... i ordered my TiBook from a store in my neighborhood as soon as they were announced... (when was that.. october?)... after the usual delays and more delays.. i was called by them today saying that apple had shipped the TiBook to them yesterday and even provided fed ex tracking numbers.... so, this seems like encouraging news... although it's not the first time they've claimed "it's shipping right now"... the addition of the fed ex tracking numbers does add validity to their story.... it could mean i'll have the TiBook by the end of the week."
"I wrote here a couple of weeks ago regarding the ridiculous delay on my G4 TiBook. Well...I finally received it last week (34 calendar days after the initial purchase order was placed); HOWEVER - when I did receive it had a black scratch on the top of the book, an inch long grazing through the titanium finish ;-( So...I called Apple. I told them the story and they looked at their records, and, among other things, found in their notes that I contacted them several times during the PB-CR/RW delay. They were sympathetic to my concern that I had waited so long for this book -- just to get a tarnished one. So, they let me keep this one while they put a RUSH order in for an IDENTICAL one!! Now check this out - the order from that new book went in on 12/7 and I just received it (back at the office) today! That's FIVE calendar days (including the weekend) for them to build the book, ship it, etc. =) Furthermore, I tracked the shipment and noticed that it was coming straight from Taiwan (whereas my initial PB came from Cali). Anyway, it is here now and I will open it up and check it out this evening. It's just fascinating how they got that book out to me so quickly, being a BTO."
"I have the CDRW tibook 667 w/1GB. It is amazing. The writer is faster than rated, is quiet, and the slot drive loads much more smoothly than does the DVD drive in my tibook revA 500."
"Perhaps they are getting to many returns on units because of these drives. My new Powerbook is less then 5 weeks old and when reading Data CDs the noise and vibration is horrible and so bad I cant even take my laptop out into public places. The entire unit vibrates so intensely it will soon become the next spoke in the digital hub, one giant rectangular (word removed - Ed). I need to take it on a cross country trip at the end of the month, so I dont have time to send it back into Apple"
Minor PowerBook G4/667 Issues
Thursday, December 13, 2001 @ 10:52:AM CT | Article Link
by Stephen Hildreth
The PowerBook G4/667 is the best computer I've ever used. It's fast, has a great display, and has the best keyboard I've experienced on a PowerBook (even better than the one on my old beloved 1400c). That said, there are a couple of issues that are nagging me, and I thought I would throw them out there for you to read.
First, the end of the new power plug (the part that plugs into the computer) is too smooth. Especially this time of year, when my hands are dry, I'm having a very difficult time unplugging the PowerBook. I typically end up pulling the wire itself, rather than the plug, to get it out of the PowerBook, and I know this is bad. The plug itself needs to have a little texture or something.
Second, I'm having trouble completing FTP transfers to my server when I'm using AirPort 2. I don't have any problems with FTP when I'm on a land-line plugged into the modem port, but I can't complete the transfer when I'm using AirPort, and it doesn't matter what FTP program I'm using. Anyone else have this problem? Changing AirPort settings doesn't seem to make a difference. Send me a message if you have a solution--I'm using a standard 56k modem connection to my local ISP.
Beyond these two minor issues, I'm very happy with the PowerBook, and I'll have more for you later.
Apple: PowerBook DVD and CD-RW Drive Supply Problems
Wednesday, December 12, 2001 @ 2:45:PM CT | Article Link
?.|k G4s with the standard DVD drive are now listed at The Apple Store with an 8 day waiting period. Models with the optional BTO CD-RW drive are still unavailable. One of our readers shed some light on the situation:
"Today I phoned the Apple Store to ask the status of my order of a PowerBook 550 DVD 30 GB. I was informed that, like with the CDRW drives before, there now is a 'problem' with the DVD drives too. So no deliveries at the moment. Next week they expect an update on the situation from Apple, so the man said."
So it looks as if, 13 days before Christmas, Apple is not shipping PowerBook G4s. We'll keep you updated.

Thanks for choosing Macintosh

A while back I was rooting through some old Mac documentation in my office and ran across this note included with a bunch of other stuff from an old Mac SE or LC II. This photo is of the Apple Manufacturing team, not all Apple employees. Still, it's pretty neat and adds a personal touch to your computer purchase. Too bad Steve Jobs outlawed just this thing -- in this day and age, the personal touch may be exactly what people need. Click on the thumbnail to see a larger image (353 KB; 774x895 pixels):
From the "Why Bother?" department
Thursday, December 6, 2001 @ 10:49:AM CT | Article Link
This one isn't PowerBook or iBook related, but it caught our eye anyway. MacZone has Aladdin Tuner 3.0 (item number 00117064) available in their clearance section for $0.99. Yes, that's 99 cents! Why bother? Their standard shipping, Airborne Ground, costs $5.69 (to my Zip), for a grand total of $6.68. Shipping actually costs you about 5 times more than the actual product. This is a little silly, to say the least.

The Power of Digital Mobility: Part II
Wednesday, December 5, 2001 @ 10:45:AM CT | Article Link
by Noah Kravitz
A few months ago, I wrote a piece for MacDirectory magazine about the past, present and future of Apple Computer in the K-12 classroom. The article came in the wake of Steve Jobs' turning the NECC (National Education and Computing Conference) keynote address this past summer into a launching pad for the new iBook line of computers. Apple aimed the small, durable laptops squarely at educators and has reaped the success of that strategy ever since. From the launchtime sale of some $20 million in goods and services to a school district in Virginia to this week's announcement that Apple has won a contract from the State of Maine (funding is still pending) to provide some 33,000 iBooks to seventh and eighth graders throughout the state's schools, it's clear that the iBooks are a hit in the schools...

Is the PowerBook G4/667 too noisy?
Tuesday, December 4, 2001 @ 11:26:PM CT | Article Link
by Stephen Hildreth
Go2Mac ran a story yesterday about the noisy fan in 667MHz PowerBook G4s. After using my PowerBook G4/667 for a couple of weeks now, I have to agree. Even on a metal desk in a relatively cool room, the fan in my 667 runs nearly constantly, especially after the computer has been on for a couple of hours. I read somewhere on the Mac Web that the new PowerBooks are nearly 'silent' in their operation, with the new hard drives and all, and while that may be true for the 550MHz model, the 667MHz model is one of the noisiest computers I've ever used.
The internal 30GB hard drive is pretty quiet, although it's noisy when accessing data. And when the fan is off, the PowerBook is very quiet. When I shut down the computer, I have to put my ear to the keyboard to hear the hard drive stop spinning.
The fan doesn't come on right away, but if you leave your PowerBook on for an hour or two, it begins to run constantly, or nearly so. I have yet to play a DVD on my new PowerBook, but I would imagine that the fan would be intrusive. I know it is when I'm trying to listen to iTunes music through the two speakers. Yes, there are a couple of different fan levels, but the highest level seems to be the most common.
The fan is very good at heat dissipation. The PowerBook rarely gets hot from my point of view, with the exception of the area near the power button. After being on for 5 or 6 hours, the power button gets quite toasty.
Is the PowerBook G4/667 too noisy? That's pretty subjective. Fan noise doesn't really bother me - the 667's speed and screen make me forget all about fan noise. Heck, I sometimes enjoy the white noise. Other people, though, will find the fan to be very intrusive. Folks like Charles Moore over at Applelinks, who enjoys working in silence, should give this machine a wide berth.
What do you think? Have a 667MHz or 550MHz model? Send us your thoughts.
Final Cut Pro 3 on a PowerBook G4/667
Tuesday, December 4, 2001 @ 10:51:PM CT | Article Link
Video editors can now use Final Cut Pro 3 with a PowerBook. From Apple's press release today:
"G4 real-time effects utilize the power of the G4 Velocity Engine to deliver dual-stream, real-time effects such as cross-dissolves, titles and color correction. Because this is the first dual-stream, real-time architecture with no add-in hardware requirements, even editors using Final Cut Pro 3 on a PowerBook® G4 have access to true real-time effects playback. The number and complexity of G4 real-time effects scale as processing power increases.
Providing over 40 minutes of video per gigabyte of hard drive space, OfflineRT is an ideal format for mobile editing. Using a simple FireWire® connection, editors can capture and transcode DV footage to OfflineRT on the fly. This means that editors can work with massive amounts of high-quality, timecode-accurate videomore than 24 hours on a PowerBooks internal hard drivethat can be reconnected to the original source material, without having to resort to special external storage solutions. OfflineRT is the first native offline format available for DV, and it can also be used by editors working with standard definition or high definition formats."
To do this, though, you'll need to purchase one of the new 667MHz models (preferably with the 5400rpm 48GB hard drive option). The other models just don't have enough horsepower.
